ELA Curriculum

Students in Grades K-5 participate in the Core Ready reading and writing curriculum based on balance literacy. Students will have an opportunity to listen to read-aloud books and practice reading strategies with just right leveled books around narrative, informational and persuasive text.Students are assessed to identify their reading level to support their selection of just right reading books for independent practice.  Students in grades K-1 are required to practice reading at home for 15 minutes every day to improve their reading stamina. Students in grades 2-5 are required to read for 20-30 minutes daily to build reading stamina and practice reading strategies.

As part of the students language arts instruction, students also receive small group guided reading instruction 4 days a week. Teachers work with students in small groups based on reading levels and data to instruct students in reading skills and strategies that will support students improvement in reading complex text.

Students in grades K-2 and selected 3-5 classes are also instructed in phonics using Fundations and Recipe for Reading. This curriculum supports students in the foundations needed for reading and writing success.

Students in grades K-5 will participate in writing workshop based on the common core learning standards of narrative, informational and persuasive writing  that is aligned and supported of the reading units of study.

Students are also immersed in a unit of study in poetry for reading and writing during poetry month in April.
