Math Instruction

Students at PS 107 currently engage in the following Math program:

Grades K-5: Envision Math. Envision Math combines problem-based learning with visual learning. Students learn more about math by solving rich, reality-based problems. They gain a deeper, clearer understanding of math concepts with visual models and scaffolds in every lesson.

ENGLISH LANGUAGE ARTS

Students in Grades K-5 participate in the Core Ready reading and writing curriculum based on balance literacy. Students will have an opportunity to listen to read-aloud books and practice reading strategies with just right leveled books around narrative, informational and persuasive text. Students are assessed to identify their reading level to support their selection of just right reading books for independent practice.  Students in grades K-1 are required to practice reading at home for 15 minutes every day to improve their reading stamina. Students in grades 2-5 are required to read for 20-30 minutes daily to build reading stamina and practice reading strategies.

As part of the students language arts instruction, students also receive small group guided reading instruction 4 days a week. Teachers work with students in small groups based on reading levels and data to instruct students in reading skills and strategies that will support students improvement in reading complex text.

Students in grades K-2 and selected 3-5 classes are also instructed in phonics using Fundations and Recipe for Reading. This curriculum supports students in the foundations needed for reading and writing success.

Students in grades K-5 will participate in writing workshop based on the common core learning standards of narrative, informational and persuasive writing  that is aligned and supported of the reading units of study.

Students are also immersed in a unit of study in poetry for reading and writing during poetry month in April.

SOCIAL STUDIES

Grades K-5: All students in grades Kindergarten through 5th Grade receive Social Studies instruction two times a week through reasearch on topics, hands on experiences with primary resources and field trips that support their learning. The Social Studies Framework is designed to prepare students for college, career and civic life with courses that are rigorous and aligned to New York State Learning Standards, both Common Core and Social Studies. SCIENCE

Grades K-5: Amplify Science is a K–8 science curriculum that blends hands-on investigations, literacy-rich activities, and interactive digital tools to empower students to think, read, write, and discuss like real scientists and engineers. Arts Instruction

Music: All students at P.S. 107 have the opportunity to attend a cycle of Music instruction with our Music Teacher Ms. Osorio. Music instruction includes a variety of components such as: listening to music for appreciation, learning to read music, and musical expression through chorus, playing music on the keyboard or the recorder. Students exhibit their learning to various music recitals throughout the year. Ms. Osorio has partnered up with Music in the Brain to help support the vision of allowing children access to their learning through a variety of entry points and helping implement their learning on music to all aspects of learning. Visual Arts:  All students at P.S. 107 have the opportunity to attend a cycle of visual art instruction with our Art Teacher Mr. Moore. Students engage in units that explore the elements of art such as color, line, texture, shape, for, value. Students exhibit their learning throughout the year through displays at school and school art shows.

Technology

Grades Pre-K- 5th Grade: All classrooms are equipped to provide all learners at PS 107 with the opportunity to engage in the use of technology to enhance their learning. Each classroom is equipped with interactive boards used by teachers and students to engage in learning. All classrooms are equipped with computers that provide students hands on interaction to research and support their classroom learning. Classes also have a scheduled time to visit one of the two computer labs and receive additional time to learn and explore the use of computers and programs.

4th and 5th Grade Clubs

In preperation to be College and Career Ready students in 4th and 5th Grade participate in clubs during the school day for 45 minutes in 9 week cycles. Students have choice between:
Art, Music, Gym, and Science.

Throughout the year students can participate in 3 clubs.
Below is the introduction schedule to clubs for 4th and 5th Graders. During these weeks students will participate in all four clubs for a week, before making a decision for their first club.
